The authors offer a short, simple, and constructive proof of the Weyl-von Neumann theorem saying that given an (unbounded) selfadjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space there exists a selfadjoint operator having arbitrarily small Hilbert-Schmidt norm such that the sum of the two has pure point spectrum.
