A distributed control problem for a hyperbolic operator with an infinite number of variables is considered. Following the well-known monography by \textit{J. L. Lions} [''Optimal control of systems governed by partial differential equation'' (1971; Zbl 0203.010)], the authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for optimal control.
