The present third edition of this book is an insignificant revision of the second edition (1992; Zbl 0746.11001). The first edition (1988) has been reviewed in Zbl 0646.10001. The most important novelty is the description of the history of Fermat's last theorem, which was proved in the meantime. On the whole, the representation of the historical background of many number-theoretical problems is very interesting.
