This book is composed of some selected papers of N. J. Pagano, who is one of the pioneers in mechanics of composite materials. The papers are organized into eight chapters. The first chapter entitled ``Some basic studies of composite behavior'' contains papers related to some experimental and analytical preliminary studies on composite materials. The second chapter ``Exact solutions for elastic response'' is mainly devoted to the comparison of analytical composite material models with three-dimensional elasticity solutions of the corresponding structural problems. The third chapter ``Micromechanics'' contains papers which are concerned with micromechanical behavior of composite materials. After presenting some basic concepts in micromechanics, the averaged micro-stresses and strains are obtained together with effective moduli of various laminated composite materials. Chapter 4 ``Laminate theories'' studies the general formulation of effective constitutive laws for laminated composites and, as a special case, considers the classical lamination theory and boundary layer analysis. The fifth chapter ``Interlaminar stresses'' contains papers related to stresses between the laminates in composite materials. In these papers, various composite structures are studied by use of the three-dimensional elasticity theory. The interlaminar stresses are studied with those of composite material models. The next chapter ``Involute (rosette) bodies'' discusses the importance of involute bodies used in the rocket industry. Chapter 7 ``Some carbon-carbon spinoffs'' is devoted to the study of composite turbine blades, to the validation of advanced composite thermal stress analysis methods, to the interlaminar shear strength of cloth-reinforced composites and to elastic response of multi-directional coated-fiber composites. The last chapter ``Micromechanics of brittle matrix composites'' is concerned with the discussion of fiber-reinforced composites with brittle matrix. At the end of the book, the list of selected works of Pagano is also given. The book is very well organized and will be useful for researchers working in the area of composite materials. I recommend the book for individual readers as well as for institutional libraries.
