Summary: Does every bounded operator on a Hilbert space have a nontrivial invariant subspace? This question has a positive answer for finite-dimensional and for non-separable spaces. The problem is unsolved for general separable Hilbert spaces, and it is for those known as the invariant subspace problem. This article is a historical overview on various attempts to give partial solutions to the problem.
