The authors examine the Seth proposal concerning a class of Lagrange strain measures, and Hill-Macven concept of work conjugate stress and strain in solid mechanics. As an application, the authors derive an explicit tensorial expression for the stress \(T^{(m)}\) conjugate to Seth's strain \(E^{(m)}\). Purely mathematical contribution.
