This book deals with mathematics applied to industrial processes. The first part is devoted to modelling of some projects studied by the authors. Then algorithms for optimization are detailed. Only local methods are described such that for instance the conjugate gradient method or variable metric methods. These techniques need regularity of the functional to minimize and only local minima are obtained. I regret that no global optimization method is proposed in this book. They are fundamental for industrial problems because local optima are not very interesting. The third chapter studies Maxwell's equations that are solved by finite (or boundary) element method. Then, Monte Carlo methods for calculating multiple integrals are presented in chapter 4. Chapter 5 treats of image processing. Continuous and discrete Fourier transforms are detailed. Wavelet analysis is also described. Fractal image compression is defined in this chapter and the performance of these different techniques is studied. The last chapter gives models of hysteresis with applications (energy dissipation, wave equation,\dots). An appendix brings an introduction to mathematical models (generalities) and gives some developments on fractal image compressions and on Sobolev spaces. At last a bibliography containing 339 titles ends this very interesting book. All techniques and methods are clearly and rigorously presented.
