In this paper a generalized notion of unit normal bundle in the context of rectifiable currents is defined and discussed. Then the author obtains results aimed to the application of direct methods to geometric variational problems in a geometric measure-theoretic setting. In particular, results about compactness of suitable classes of generalized unit normal bundles and semicontinuity of certain functionals are proved.
