The authors analyze the distribution of singular points and stability of a symmetric flow through a curved tube. A theoretical criterion for the destabilization of flow structure is given as the number of vortices in the secondary flow changes from 2 to 4. Using Galerkin and perturbation methods, the authors obtain the critical Dean number for bifurcation, and give semi-analytical expressions for stream function and axial velocity. The results obtained are consistent with experimental data.
