The author describes explicit identities showing that if \(\alpha \in K\) is a sum of \(2^n\) squares, then its norm \(N_{K/F}(\alpha)\) is a sum of \(2^n\) squares in \(F\). Here \(K/F\) is a separable field extension of characteristic not 2.
