The authors give a Chevalley-Kostant construction of the basic modules of \(\widehat{{\mathfrak {sl}}(2)}\), which is then used to construct a certain endomorphism of a basic module and to compute its trace on weight subspaces, which relates to the corresponding KPRV determinant at \(q=1\). The construction of basic modules given has no analogue for semi simple Lie algebras.
