A brief historical survey of the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method is given. Some SOR results are derived from semiiterative methods (SIM) principles. Finally, as an application, the steady state distribution of a homogeneous Markov chain is discussed which illustrates SOR results for \(p\)-cyclic matrices and the phenomenon of ``extended convergence''.
