This paper points out the Dutch social climate around 1800, which stimulated the emergence of five amateur mathematical societies.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEOne of them, the Amsterdam Mathematical Society (known as Wiskundig Genootschap) became a national institution. Outside The Netherlands amateur societies either disappeared or were not involved with their professional counterparts. An appendix gives a list of european mathematical societies founded before 1950.
