The aim of this paper is to discuss a novel method for the rejection of sinusoidal disturbances with unknown frequency. A discrete-time algorithm is proposed, adapting an existing continuous-time algorithm (Bodson \& Douglas, 1997) for which the design of the (nonlinear) control law is conveniently carried out using linear techniques. On the basis of the new discrete-time algorithm, the noise rejection properties may be predicted using a phase-locked loop technique that decomposes the noise signal into in-phase and quadrature components. Estimates are obtained for the standard deviations of the plant output and of the adaptive parameters. The simulation results show that the new approach is accurate even in the presence of high levels of noise.
