The paper studies two lemmas on acyclic orientations and totally cyclic orientations of a graph. It is shown how these lemmas can be considered as special cases of the shelling lemma in vector subspaces. It also gives a simple graph-theoretical proof as well as a proof by interpretations of the shelling lemma in the special setting of graphs. In addition, it presents similar interpretations of closely related theorems in vector subspaces, which do not seem to admit graph-theoretical proofs.
