In various situations the determination of local inhomogeneities, by numerical means, is of high importance. Here, the authors propose a finite difference approach to this problem. Namely, the authors consider an elastic medium with local inhomogeneities with smooth change of elastic parameters. The medium is bounded from above by a free surface, and it is constituted by plane-parallel welded interfaces where elastic parameters have a jump. The field is created and explored by several pairs of emitter-receiver devices located in a vicinity of the free surface. Numerous simulations are performed, and their validity is confirmed by comparison with existing accurate results.
