Closed timelike curves and their importance in theories of quantum gravity are discussed at the example of tunneling spacetimes constructed from generalized Misner spacetimes. These models are quantum mechanically stable and show negative energy densities and closed timelike curves at the Planck scale. Implications on cosmological boundary conditions and gravitational kinks are discussed.
