This article reviews the theory of negative ion formation in molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces. We describe the computational methods which have been developed over the last decade to calculate the static properties of negative ions formed by electron-scattering resonances, properties which include the resonance lifetime and energy. The relative strengths and weaknesses of each method, and the basic physics of negative ion formation at surfaces, are illustrated by considering a single, but widely studied system: the \(^2\Pi_g\) negative ion state of \(N^-_2\) on Ag.
