The author proves that a stratified shear flow with sinusoidal shear is nonlinearly unstable. Sufficient condition for nonlinear stability is obtained which is a generalization of Rayleigh criterion for constant density shear flows. However, the obtained results do not specify the parameter range where the state of stability or instability remains undetermined.
