This is a report on the historical part of a broader research project on the career patterns of women and men in mathematics. That research was performed by the author together with \textit{A. Abele, H. Neunzert}, and \textit{J. Krüsken}. It was partly published in Mitt. Dtsch. Math. Ver. 2001, No. 2, 8-16 (2001). In her article, Tobies focusses on biobliographical sources on the lives of both famous and unknown female mathematicians. Among the latter figures Marie Gernet (1865-1924), the first German woman to take a doctorate in mathematics at Heidelberg University in 1895. Tobies discusses reasons for impediments to the careers of female mathematicians and gives an extensive bibliography (two and a half pages).
