The paper deals with characterizations of discriminator and dual discriminator varieties by equational conditions and by congruence properties. The author gives some different proofs of known results, shows that some conditions can be omitted and establishes other characterizations of (dual) discriminator varieties. Furthermore, the author examines the importance of congruence properties of free algebras over three generators for (dual) discriminator varieties.
