The aim of this paper is to give a simple proof of the classical Liu estimate on the decay of positive waves in a solution of \(n \times n \) systems of conservation laws. The proof relies on a change of variable which decouples the waves in an approximate solution at the speed level. This change of variables partially describes the intercation effects that occur between waves of different families.
