The authors define for each cofibration a generalized Hopf-Ganea invariant and use it as a tool for computing the weak category of finite CW complexes. The power of the proposed method is illustrated by a short direct proof of the classical result of \textit{P. A. Schweitzer}: catSp(2)=3 [Topology 3, 337-355 (1965; Zbl 0137.42401)].
