The author studies conditions which guarantee that an unbounded operator is the generator of the \(C_0\)-group of operators in a Banach space \(X\) satisfying a polynomial growth condition. If \(X\) is a Hilbert space, necessary conditions are obtained. The results are applied to a Friedrichs model given by \(Tf(x)=xf(x)+\langle f,\varphi \rangle\psi (x)\).
