The following problem of optimal control of the melting process is cosidered: It is required to melt a given portion of a metal sample with minimal input of heat. The control is the time distribution of the heat input. Two algorithms are suggested for solving the primal problem. The variational problem is solved numerically. It is shown that the optimal control is provided by ``injection'' of heat at the initial instant.
