From knowledge intensive CAD to knowledge intensive engineering. IFIP TC5 WG5. 2 4th workshop on knowledge intensive CAD, Parma, Italy, May 22-24, 2000 (Q5954400)

From the introduction: The aim of the workshops is to clarify and elaborate the concepts of knowledge intensive design and CAD by providing an international forum for mutual discussions and exchange of opinions of experts of the field. The first workshop focused on exploring the concept of knowledge intensive design as a part of knowledge intensive engineering activities. The second workshop examined architectures and methodologies for ``knowledge intensive CAD'' based on the results of the first workshop. The third workshop focused on the implementations and applications of knowledge intensive CAD systems. The fourth workshop has looked at the evolution of knowledge intensive design for the product life-cycle moving towards knowledge intensive engineering. The scope of the fourth KIC Workshop included: Architectures for knowledge intensive CAD; Tools for knowledge intensive CAD; Methodologies for knowledge intensive CAD; Implementation of knowledge intensive CAD; Applications of knowledge intensive CAD; Evolution of knowledge intensive design for the life-cycle; Formal methods. A total of 22 papers have been presented at the workshop, 18 of which have been accepted for this volume after a review. The selected papers provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in knowledge intensive engineering discussing theoretical aspects and also practical systems and experiences gained in this area. An invited speaker paper is also included discussing the role of knowledge in product and process innovation and technology for processing semantic knowledge. Together with the proceedings of previous workshops, the volume presents an overview of an important novel area for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, systems developers of advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing systems, and engineers involved in industrial applications.
