\textit{Th. Fack} and \textit{P. de la Harpe} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 30, 49-73 (1980; Zbl 0425.46046)] proved that in a type II\(_{\text 1}\) factor, every element \(z\) with central trace \(0\) is the sum of no more than 10 commutators \([a,b]=ab-ba\) with \(\|a\|\leq 12\|z\|\) and \(\|b\|\leq 12\). Constructing a series of commutators with the support of the commutators being mutually orthogonal and using Popa's relative Dixmier property [cf. \textit{S. Popa}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 32, 743-767 (1999; Zbl 0966.46036)], the author extends this result as follows: NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEGiven a pair of II\(_1\) factors \(N \subseteq M\) with finite Jones index \([M\colon N]\), there exists a natural number \(m\) such that for every \(z\in M\) with \(E_{N'\cap M}(z)=0\), \(z\) is of the form \(z=\sum_{i=1}^m [a_i,b_i]\) where \(a_i\in N\), \(b_i\in M\), \(\|a_i\|\leq 2\), \(\|b_i\|\leq \frac{9}{2}\|z\|\). The number \(m\) depends solely on \([M\colon N]\) and thus is independent of \(z\). Here \(E_{N'\cap M}\) denotes the trace-preserving conditional expectation. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEAs an application, a vector space isomorphism between certain relative commutants and certain cyclic tensor products is investigated.
