This paper addresses important and timely issues of reducing the complexity of rule-based systems (such as e.g., a fuzzy controller). This problem becomes critical for multivariable systems where rules involve a significant number of input variables (that is conditions in the rules). There are two main simplification mechanisms studied in the paper: (a) a combination of adjacent rules with the same conclusion part, and (b) a rule combination using don't care conditions (a construct that involves rules concerning emtpy cells occurring in the rule-base). The properties of the simplified rule-based systems are studied including their computational complexity.
