The authors establish a unified description of inelastic material behaviour taking into account the evolution of defects and changes in mass density. First, the kinematics of a generalized oriented model is presented, and strain measures for macro- and micromotions are discussed. Then, the authors use the variational approach to derive balance laws. Special cases are discussed, and a number of correlations with known results from hydrodynamics and phase transitions are considered. The Clausius-Duhem inequality is extended to include irreversible changes induced by defect evolution. Finally, the authors formulate a nonlocal constitutive model accounting for the evolution of defect density.
