Let \(M\) be an irreducible symmetric space of noncompact type of dimension at least \(3\) and other than \(D_{IV}(2)\), and let \(\pi: E \to M\) be any vector bundle over \(M\). The author shows that any \(E\)-valued \(L^2\) harmonic \(1\)-form of \(M\) vanishes. This implies the vanishing theorem for harmonic maps on irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
