The author discusses the effect of the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) for an ideal soliton and for a dispersion-managed soliton. The pulse-width increases either in proportion the square root of distance, like in the case of linear pulse, but with a reduced coefficient or logarithmically with the distance. The difference seems to originates from whether the nonlinear trapping operates effectively or not. The author shows that for a dispersion-managed soliton having a relatively large value, the nonlinear trapping operators more effectively due to the enhanced, power and pulse-width oscillation and the effect of PMD seems to be much reduced.
