The present paper addresses the problem of determining the optimal auto-sleep schedule minimizing the expected power consumption per time unit in the steady state. The authors propose the phase-type approximation method to generate the approximate auto-sleep schedule for the corresponding renewal arrival process. Actually, statistical estimation methods for the phase-type distribution are developed. Numerical examples examine the accuracy of the approximation techniques and compare the results of the proposed method to other existing results quantitatively, drawing usefulness optimistic judgements.
