In this paper the authors obtain a mean value theorem for arithmetic functions over short intervals with the Selberg-Delange method, by using the Hooley-Huxley contour. Their result improves a theorem established by \textit{Z. Cui} and \textit{J. Wu} [Acta Arith. 163, No. 3, 247--260 (2014; Zbl 1303.11108)].
