[For the review of the 1st ed. see (2001; Zbl 1203.74001).] This textbook covers a course in strength of materials, containing also analytical and numerical methods used in industrial mechanical design. After a short introduction, the author presents energy methods in linear elasticity. Then the book describes the asymmetrical bending, elastic-plastic bending and torsion of beams, the analysis of beams on elastic foundations, the distribution of stresses in axisymmetrical shells, bending of cylindrical shells, and the elastic-plastic analysis of thick-walled cylinders and disks. Finally, a chapter is devoted to elastic stability. The book is completed by an appendix on the finite element method, widely applied in structural mechanics. The work may be useful to civil and mechanical engineers.
