On one approach to the estimation of a triangular element degeneration in a triangulation (Q6095200)

The question of the numerical degeneracy of triangulations is a key question in numerical simulation, navigation, geodesy, etc. The authors introduce the functional \(G(T) = \mathrm{Area}(T) / \mathrm{Perim}(T)^2\) which turns out to be maximized by the equilateral triangle. They study it, but they do not explain why this metric would be adequate for the task.
