The following problem has been raised recently: Is it possible to prove directly an asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds which allows to deduce the Connes integration formula without employing ultrafilters? The main result of the paper under review is a positive solution to this problem.
