The authors study a class of singular integral operators with piecewise continuous matrix coefficients, defined on segments of the real line, in the context of weighted Lebesgue and Hölder spaces. Their Fredholm property is characterised and a formula for the Fredholm index is obtained. The consideration of this class of operators is justified by their appearance in various applications and concrete examples.
