For the non-specialist, this article presents the construction of infinite words such as the Thue-Morse word, the Fibonacci word and the Kolakoski word. Again in a popularized style, he explains how to extend factors of length \(n\) into factors of length \(n+1\). Special factors with more than one extension are referred to here as ``branchwords''. For the Fibonacci word, the links with the Wythoff game and numeration systems are recalled. This article introduces combinatorial questions to a wide audience.
