The author uses a filtration of complex Stiefel manifolds given by \textit{H. Miller} [Topology 24, 411--419 (1985; Zbl 0581.55006)] in order to construct cone-decompositions of the unitary groups. As an application, the author reproves the equality \(\text{cat}U(n)=n\) proved by \textit{W. Singhof} [Math. Z. 145, 111--116 (1975; Zbl 0315.55012)].
