The propagation of longitudinal-torsional nonlinear waves is studied using fourth-order hyperbolic system. The authors simplify the model by assuming the waves to be uni-directional. This turns the problem into a second-order system. It is shown that the results obtained for Riemann and shock waves using the simplified system agree with those of the higher-order system.
