For a given group \(G\) the authors consider the (Abelian) group \(\text{Var}(G)\) consisting of those automorphisms of \(G\) that stabilize the chain \(1<C_G(\Aut(G))<G\), where \(L(G)=C_G(\Aut(G))\). Various conclusions about the structure of \(\text{Var}(G)\) are derived under conditions related to the subgroup \(E(G):=[G,C_{\Aut(G)}(\text{Var}(G))]\).
