A class of one-dimensional impacting oscillators is studied. Between impacts, the dynamics is given by the smooth ordinary differential equations \[ \dot{x}=y,\quad \dot{y}=F(t,x,y,\mu). \] A bifurcation leading to chaos of horseshoe type is described.
