The authors obtain the well-known Cantor intersection theorem and the Baire category theorem in the setting of 2-metric spaces introduced and studied by \textit{S. Gähler} [Math. Nachr. 26, 115--148 (1963; Zbl 0117.16003)]. They apply Cantor's theorem to deduce some fixed point theorems in 2-metric spaces.
