The author presents Hilbert's Fifth Problem and his main result, obtained in collaboration with \textit{J. R. Dorroh} in [``A theory of strongly continuous semigroups in terms of Lie generators'', J. Funct. Anal. 136, No. 1, 114--126 (1996; Zbl 0848.22005)], which characterizes the jointly continuous semigroups on a Polish space. Some remarks on related semigroups on spaces of measures and their applications are also addressed.
