This article presents an investigation of the switching dynamics of globally coupled neural networks when induced by `shot noise'. The authors also consider macroscopic regimes and the lifetimes of the associated metastable states. In particular, the authors show that shot noise can change the nature of attractors of large networks into metastable states, and that these states may persist depending on the various parameters of the system. Interestingly, not all macroscopic states emerge from a parameter region admitted by an infinite network, however, shot noise can induce the system into these states.
