The purpose of the paper is to study the uniqueness problem of an \(L\) function in the Selberg class sharing two sets with an arbitrary meromorphic function having only finitely many poles. The authors discuss the least cardinality results ever obtained in the literature improving all the existing results of \textit{Q.-Q. Yuan} et al. [Lith. Math. J. 58, No. 2, 249--262 (2018; Zbl 1439.11231)] and those of \textit{A. Banerjee} and \textit{A. Kundu} [Lith. Math. J. 61, No. 2, 161--179 (2021; Zbl 1469.11341)] and [Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2) 70, No. 3, 1227--1244 (2021; Zbl 1482.11117)].
