The authors consider an initial boundary value problem with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions for the homogeneous wave equation with variable coefficients in \(n\)-dimensional space. The initial data are assumed to depend on a small wavelength parameter. In order to study the behavior of the local energy density at the high frequency limit, they concentrate on the Wigner measures associated to the solution of the wave equation. The computation of Wigner measures is done by using the Gaussian beam formalism, which is largely discussed in the paper.
