A comparison test for the Riccati equations is obtained. The well-known Sturm comparison theorem and an integral comparison theorem for second order linear differential equations are derived as special cases. Consequently, a result on the comparison between oscillation of two second order linear differential equations is found. These results have been applied to the Mathieu equation, a Hill-type equation.
