The authors investigate an eigenvalue problem for a nonautonomous second order ordinary differential equation on a closed interval. They derive the asymptotic formulae for the eigenvalues and the maxima of the eigenfunctions. They prove the existence of infinite numbers of positive and negative eigenvalues. In addition, they establish comparison theorems.
