In this note a generating function of multi-variables for the number of chains of subgroups in the lattice of subgroups of a finite cyclic group is given. This leads to explicit formulas for the number of chains of subgroups in the lattice of subgroups of a finite cyclic group and for the central Delannoy numbers, simplifying the results of \textit{M. Tărnăuceanu}, [Eur. J. Comb. 30, No. 1, 283-287 (2009; Zbl 1161.20059)], and \textit{M. Tărnăuceanu} and \textit{L. Bentea}, [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 159, No. 9, 1084-1096 (2008; Zbl 1171.20043)].
